How typedigital supports Lern-Fair in ensuring greater educational equality with a web application
Lern-Fair is a non-profit organisation with the vision of "fighting together for equal education and opportunities for all". The team has been honoured several times, including with the German Engagement Award, the most important award for civic engagement in Germany. The non-profit organisation offers free learning support with the help of a digital platform - more precisely, its web application - by bringing together volunteer tutors with educationally disadvantaged pupils. This gives financially disadvantaged pupils the opportunity to take advantage of individual tutoring or attend group courses. The platform currently has over 16,000 registered users and over 1,000 courses on offer - including on socially relevant topics such as bullying and social health.

<p>Our method involves regular iteration loops with the help of prototypes. This allows us to develop first-class solutions for Lern-Fair that are perfectly tailored to the needs of the users.</p>

<p><em>Experienced developers, UX and UI designers and project managers work closely together in our interdisciplinary team.</em></p>
<h2>Problem</h2>
<p>While Lern-Fair focussed primarily on creating courses and forming learning pairs in its first product iterations, it lacked essential functionalities to be able to handle the learning units completely via the platform.</p>
<p>This meant that helpers and students had to switch between different tools, which often led to errors or misunderstandings between participants.</p>
<p>The platform was mainly used as an admin and administration area and hardly supported users during the actual learning or teaching process.</p>
<h2>Solution</h2>
<p>Pupils and helpers should be supported in working together in a structured and long-term manner. All necessary information and tools must be made easily accessible and centralised according to needs.</p>
<p>As experts in digital product development, we therefore expanded the existing product by designing and implementing the following features:</p>

<li>In-app notifications</li>
<li>ideo conferencing</li>
</ol>
<p>We applied the agile project management method Scrum in order to be able to react quickly to changes in requirements. We worked closely with Lern-Fair through weekly meetings and iterative loops to gradually expand the product. </p>
<p>The visual appearance of the web application was adapted on the basis of the existing corporate identity and applied to new components and screens. Already established interaction paradigms were utilised and expanded where necessary.</p>
<p>In terms of technologies, we relied on React Native for Web, Node.js, TypeScript, Prisma and Postgres. To ensure an efficient solution, we relied on Zoom as a video chat, which we integrated seamlessly into the platform. To realise the chat function, we worked with TalkJS, while we used Websockets as a service for Inapp notifications. The chosen technologies provide a scalable and performant solution that guarantees a technologically strong foundation for the long-term success of the learning platform.</p>

Solution
<p>Lern-Fair now offers a fully functional, first-class learning platform on which users can easily manage their appointments and be informed of important events via in-app notifications. All communication between students and teachers takes place directly on the platform via an integrated chat and video function.</p>
<p>This results in a significantly improved user experience, more control from Lern-Fair, reduced support requests and better Google ratings.</p>

<p>The design of the platform follows the corporate identity guidelines and achieves both a high recognition value and improved usability for users.</p>

<p><em>The web application now embodies the corporate identity, has enhanced features and an optimised user experience.</em></p>
<p>Technically, the solution was developed as open source. This means that third parties also have the opportunity to access the written code and learn more about programming. Here too, Lern-Fair's philosophy is to share knowledge and make it accessible to everyone.</p>
<p>We also made sure that the application can later be used as a progressive web app. This has the advantage that it can be saved on the home screen - like a native app - and does not feel like an application in the browser.</p>
