There are numerous challenges that Scrum masters encounter. typedigital GmbH describes five of them that frequently occur.
<p>Scrum masters ensure that the Scrum process runs smoothly and that colleagues can work productively and with motivation. They take on a supporting role and mediate between the various stakeholders. In the daily Scrum meetings, they take on the role of moderator and one of their main tasks is to remove obstacles and promote interaction.</p>
<p>However, experience has shown that the Scrum process does not always run as smoothly as one would imagine. Especially when it comes to integrating this agile method into companies with existing processes.</p>
<p>We have summarised five challenges that scrum masters often encounter.</p>
<h2>There is no product owner or he or she ist too dominant</h2>
<p>The product owner represents the interests of customers and is the interface between the team and external stakeholders. If their role is missing, this poses a major problem because it means that no one takes care of deadlines and project planning.</p>
<p>An overly dominant product owner, on the other hand, dictates to the team in minute detail what should be developed and how. This robs the team of creativity and personal responsibility, which can lead to a loss of motivation over time.</p>
<h2>Team members are not fully available</h2>
<p>Companies often introduce Scrum, but not consistently at all levels. Individual team members then have other commitments within the company so that they are never fully available for the Scrum process.</p>
<p>To get the most out of Scrum and make the process as smooth as possible for everyone involved, team members should be fully committed to their defined roles.</p>
<h2>Communicate openly</h2>
<p>It is not unusual for differences to arise in project teams from time to time. As a Scrum Master, it is therefore important not to shy away from open communication and conflict. Soft skills training in conflict management and communication can help.</p>
<h2>Staying in the role</h2>
<p>It can happen that team members or the line manager suddenly slip into the role of Scrum Master. However, the danger here is that these people get stuck in familiar thought patterns and it becomes more difficult to adopt the Scrum Master's perspective. This aspect makes it more difficult to carry out the process as recommended.</p>
<h2>Lack of freedom of decision</h2>
<p>Managers often explicitly want Scrum to increase productivity. However, when it comes to giving teams the necessary autonomy to make decisions independently, there is a lack of willingness to do so.</p>
<p>Here, too, there is the problem of old thought patterns that make it difficult for teams to adopt a new perspective. However, this is extremely important for this agile method.</p>

<p>The introduction of the agile Scrum method is recommended in most cases regarding the area of software development. However, introducing Scrum can be extremely difficult, especially at the beginning. The five aspects we have described are just a few of the obstacles that can occur.</p>
